What It Was Like Being in Windsor at The Royal Wedding

A Royal Wedding perspective from another American divorcee in Windsor that day 😉

I was hell bent on getting a glimpse of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry after their wedding ceremony on Saturday, May 19th in Windsor, England. Sometimes you just gotta see a fairy tale happen with your own two eyes.

This was my game plan:

And I put it all into action starting at 4AM on the Royal Wedding day!

Stalking the Royal Wedding: Part 1 — The First Few Hours

I took the train in from London, and arrived to Windsor at 7AM to secure my spot in front of Windsor Castle in order to attempt to get a glimpse of Harry & Meghan after the wedding!

Everyone was in a good mood and happy to be there celebrating this joyous occasion. It was fun to see news crews and folks from all over the world capturing the magic of the day.

There was lots of free wedding themed flag and tote bag swag being passed out into the crowd, along with a visitor’s guide (complete with the wedding schedule and procession map) from the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

I did get to stalk the Today Show squad as per my plan, although not as much as I would have liked because I had to save my spot. (Spoiler alert: it was so worth it!)

I was nervous about going solo — I don’t love big crowds (I find them very draining), I was worried about what I would do about standing for so long or needing to pee — but (as always with solo travel) I randomly connected with a few kind souls that helped take care of me. A Mars bar, a bathroom break buddy, and a shared seat made my day so extra special. Thank you to Ruth, Elizabeth, and the paparazzi guys on the Windsor Castle corner! ❤

Royal Wedding Stalking: Part 2 — Waiting Three More Hours Until the Ceremony Started

Luckily it was gorgeous out, everyone was in good spirits, and I found a bathroom.

We got to watch some of the Royal Wedding guests arrive to the castle — I loved seeing all of the unique dresses and hats and it helped to pass the time.

It got a little rough around hour four of waiting, because at that point most of the crowds (100,000+) had arrived, so the sidewalks were packed, and we couldn’t move in order to save our spots.

I must say that I was quite impressed with how cordial and considerate everyone was all day. Even later on, when they broadcasted the ceremony over the speakers, everyone stayed quiet (except to cheer at key points and sing along!) so everyone there could hear. It was very much like we were all wedding guests on our best behavior for the big day.

The Royal Band performed outside of Windsor Castle (right in front of my spot!) for a decent amount of time — they really got the crowd’s energy up and excited for the upcoming ceremony.

Royal Wedding Stalking: Part 3 — The Ceremony and The CARRIAGE PROCESSION!!!

The last hour on my Windsor Castle corner, and the most magical one.

The excitement on the streets was palpable as Meghan made her way to St George’s Chapel.

The ceremony was broadcasted for the crowds on the street and we cheered and sang along together. (Videos from the day are all posted on my Facebook.)

STAND BY ME WAS #EVERYTHING.

It was really cool knowing I was standing just hundreds of feet from Meghan and Harry were getting married.

When I watched the full ceremony online last night, I loved seeing that they could hear us all cheering from inside St George’s Chapel! 🙂

And then, the carriage procession… the (literal) MINUTE we had been waiting all day for.

IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT.

It was like watching a fairy tale happen — The Duke and Duchess of Sussex turning out of Windsor Castle in their horse drawn carriage, coming down the road in their royal procession, and just beaming with happiness and love in the sunshine right before our very eyes.

A moment I will never forget.

Royal Wedding Stalking: Part 4 — Post Ceremony Prosecco & A Castle Nap!

Most of the crowd headed out of Windsor after the wedding was over, but it was such a bright, sunny, happy day out, so I enjoyed staying in town for the rest of the day.

After not having a proper meal all day, I enjoyed a delicious lunch outside, with of course plenty of prosecco to celebrate the wedding day.

Then my Mom convinced me to get a souvenir to remember the day by, and I’m so glad I did because (1) I love my new Meghan and Harry mug and (2) I MET GAYLE KING while souvenir shopping outside of the castle!

I was pretty exhausted by 4PM, so I grabbed a spot in the sunshine out on the Windsor Castle lawn for the next three hours. I enjoyed a lovely nap, people watching, and time to write and reflect about my Royal Wedding day in Windsor.

I made my way back to London via train around 7PM, and fell asleep that night dreaming of castles, horse drawn carriages, and American princesses changing the world.
